The BIG 5 is a Primary PSHE and RSHE programme for 5–11-year-olds delivered through a whole-school, SAFE spiral curriculum (underpinned by the EEF SAFE Framework for Social and Emotional learning) of values-based Assemblies and/or Lessons that link closely with your own school values.
The BIG 5 CONNECT Ethos (detailed below) lays the foundations and brings to life human values on a daily basis across your school community. The BIG 5 can be delivered flexibly to suit each setting, with 60 modules in KS1 and KS2, that can be taught over 2 or 3 years on a rolling basis. Our SAFE spiral curriculum maps human development beginning with inner values and skills that develop the self first, then moves to outward-facing values and skills linked to developing relationships with others and the world.
Each term, BIG 5 Values are linked to your school values and key events such as Anti-Bullying Week. The final Summer half-term leaves space to blend your own factual puberty and/or sex education sessions (please note, we do not provide these) with The BIG 5 participatory puberty sessions to ensure your pupils receive accurate information for safeguarding, but also that they have a safe space to explore what these changes mean to them.

There are 15 five-minute mindfulness tracks with one used at the start of a session, linking to its value. Outside The BIG 5 sessions, to help refocus each class for the afternoon, ask pupils to select a Silent Sitting track to be played after lunch. To support the mental health of your entire school community, ask the whole school to stop and join in – even office staff and visitors.
There are 5 Songs based on our 5 core values, written and performed by The BIG Thinkers band and suitable for all ages. Add actions or sign language, or your own school chant to the musical interludes.
Journaling is a rare opportunity for self-reflection. Journals can be printed off and bound to produce a book for each pupil to take through the school. At each child’s discretion, they can be personal or shared – but they are never marked.
A guide to all the elements of The BIG 5, including scripts to support you when starting out.
Over time, My BIG 5 Values Journey sheets capture each pupil’s changing thoughts and ideas about each core value.
Before starting a new core value, ask pupils to complete in one colour, The BIG 5 Values Journey sheet for the relevant value. Once they have explored that value for a few weeks, ask them to reflect and add new thoughts in a different colour to show changes.
Each pair of children should have a BIG Feelings Compass to refer to in each lesson. Cut out the front and back and stick them together. There is one compass for ages 5 to 8 and one for ages 8 to 11.
